Online Communities

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

The existence of online communities can be explained by the human kind's need to communicate. As the famous quote from John Donne goes, No man is an island. People spend so much time online, on the web that they start building a community there, sharing conversations with people having common interests and hobbies. And as the web connects people from all countries and cultures, this permits people to learn and share experiences from all around the globe. It is not only limited to one's physical neighbourhood or group of friends. During the past decades online communities have tremendously developed and have become part of our socio-cultural reality for some of us, at least. For instance, I have an offline life which is very much complementary with my online life. Often at dinners at relatives' place, I'm asked, "so how is your blog doing?" or when I try to take a picture of someone, I get the following response: "I hope this is not gonna be on your blog!" Ten years ago I don't think anyone would have known what's a blog or given such an importance to his/her online image.

Another thing is, we are spending more and more time online. The internet is no longer used just for the sake of checking ones mail or finding informations, it is used for more personal reasons from finding dates, making friends to earning money and publishing ones thoughts. For these different purposes exist different sites like myspace, hi5 and blog hosts. A common point in all these sites is the interaction that they provide to their members.

In brief, I attribute the existence of online communities to mankind's irrepressible need to communicate and share thoughts irrespective of where they are. In other words, we are building a parallel world, an online world.

    I like it :-)

I guess I'm the same too for I'm always asking: "Hey,any idea what to write for my blog?" Mom get this really often. I wouldn't say we're building a new world, but just exploring it :-)

  2. Yea online communities are super. You meet all those interesting people from all over the world. Like meeting you really opened my eyes that Africa isn't that poor, or that it shouldn't be so poor(your country was mentioned in this week's Time magazine, and it was all positive :D). The online community can really make the world a safer and a more peaceful place by connecting different people and giving them a platform to communicate.

So kuddos to you for writing that short piece :D

  3. beautiful article mo!
did you hear about that second life thing?
its a place online where you can create an account and live life in a virtual society. you can buy property, have a job...lotsa stuffs. and all this is virtual. however, ppl earn real money by offering their services. like you want a new outfit, you go and buy it. and you really pay and the designers get the money for real. i mean is that not weird? its like the real world is not enough...

  14. The world had become a lot smaller with the virtual world. Everyone and everything is real but fakes abound in the unseen world.

  17. Morinn, will you teach me the basic of Mauritian. I've just understood that it's basically a mixture of French(in phonetical transcription) with English, but now I want to start commenting in it, not just understand it(after staring at it for like over an hour :D).
