Tribute - Tenacious D

My crush of this month is here dudettes and dudes and the song is Tribute by Tenacious D, the awesome (to say the least) band with Jack Black and Kyle Gass as lead vocalist and lead guitarist.

Tribute is totally fun to listen to and the little story behind "the best song in the world" is awesome.  It's about Jack and Kyle encountering a demon who asks them to sing "the best song in the world" or he'll eat their souls. It's the kind of story you'll usually get from drunk or stoned (or both) dudes but then it's so well narrated (with the demon's voice imitation) that it actually makes this song epic!

Here goes the lyrics taken from AZlyrics.com

[Spoken]
This is the greatest and best song in the world... Tribute.

Long time ago me and my brother Kyle here,
we was hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome road.
All of a sudden, there shined a shiny demon... in the middle... of the road.
And he said:
[Sung]
"Play the best song in the world, or I'll eat your soul." (soul)
[Spoken]
Well me and Kyle, we looked at each other,
and we each said... "Okay."
[Sung]
And we played the first thing that came to our heads,
Just so happened to be,
The Best Song in the World, it was The Best Song in the World.

Look into my eyes and it's easy to see
One and one make two, two and one make three,
It was destiny.
Once every hundred-thousand years or so,
When the sun doth shine and the moon doth glow
And the grass doth grow...

Needless to say, the beast was stunned.
Whip-crack went his Whoopy tail,
And the beast was done.
He asked us: "(snort) Be you angels?"
And we said, "Nay. We are but men."
Rock!
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh-ah-ah,
Ohhh, whoah, ah-whoah-oh!

This is not The Greatest Song in the World, no.
This is just a tribute.
Couldn't remember The Greatest Song in the World, no, no.
This is a tribute, oh, to The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was The Greatest Song in the World,
All right! It was the best muthafuckin' song the greatest song in the world.
[2-part skat]
[Spoken]
And the peculiar thing is this my friends:
the song we sang on that fateful night it didn't actually sound
anything like this song.
[Sung]
This is just a tribute! You gotta believe it!
And I wish you were there! Just a matter of opinion.
Ah, fuck! Good God, God lovin',
So surprised to find you can't stop it.
[Skat]
All right! All right!

Do listen to this song, dudettes and dudes, if you haven't! Even if you don't like it, at least it'll cheer you up!

  1. Hahaha Jack Black is always funny. There are lots of songs on the album where he makes funny voices.

I really like "Things I want" from Sum 41 and Tenacous D. That's a must listen to. The lyrics are so funny, you will piss yourself laughing.

  7. I'm an absolute Tenacious D fan. If you get the chance, put your hands down on their film "The Pick of Destiny".

For a good laugh just hit the Tribute Clip, its as funny as the song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcJwz7wu8_s

BTW, on the HBO version a whole part of the song is played on Led Zeppelin's "Stairway To Heaven" track.

    Cheers. Tenacious D rules.

(i think if you're listening to it for the first time you should watch the music video, else it might sound a bit weird/confusing!)

  9. @ Sachin, I absolutely gotta find the movie! Got pick of destiny's OST from a friend today. AND Tenacious D rules! Absolutely! :D

@ Nav, yeah that gotta be a good advice for those listening to it for the first time. I must admit that it was only this year that I checked out the video!
And I love that part too... Especially the "Rock!" part. Li rente mari bien. :p

  10. It's a tribute to Led Zepp's famous song Stairway to heaven and as they say it doesn't sound like the original.

Tenacious D tries hard to be funny and that is probably why they are at the limit of the vulgar (specially thinking of their "classico")
