Killed by the rain

So the situation is such; there were torrential rains, you know the kind of rain which causes schools to be closed and kids to remain cozily at home. The only problem was that schools were not closed and kids did not remain at home. People went to work as usual and kids tried to go to school. Some were lucky enough to reach school, others came back home and one of them got killed, I don't know in what circumstances, but my guess is by drowning.

It's not a real pleasure to blame institutions and organizations but hell this time I totally blame the ministry of education and the meteorological service of Mauritius. Oh yeah it's easy to blame, I know. But this time I'll also tell you why:
Today was the fifth day of non-stop torrential rain. Let's forget the official water level and such things, it could be SEEN that the situation in the streets and bus stations was not appropriate for kids to go out. But then very important persons do not have the time too look out and SEE whether children could go to school or not. The day started normally until children had to be sent back home and some work places evacuated. Roads were flooded and buses stopped working in some regions of the island.

The Minister of Education says he's been in constant contact with heads of primary and secondary school. I don't know what kind of contact that was, but as far as I can see it brought nothing good.

Still the good thing they're stressing on is that most kids returned home safe and sound and tomorrow would be a no-school day but then that adolescent girl who died will not be brought to life, no matter how much the Minister regrets this.

I sincerely regret the loss of lives that this bad weather brought and I hope something could be done to have a better disaster management next time.

  6. "Still the good thing they're stressing on is that most kids returned home safe and sound."

This is a stupid statement... Like ok send your kids to schools, but hey we give no guarantee that they'd return.

And anyway, missing one day of school doesn't make you unsuccessful in life. So why having school on rainy days?? Some teacher's don't do anything in classes on these days..

  12. Hi. I wish to say that no one could predict that. What happened was a surprise and it was impossible for the minister to give orders so quickly

    ReplyDelete
  13. To everyone, yeah a terrible mistake occurred and no one took the responsibility. The minister just said he regrets. Like he really gives a damn! duh!

Anonymous, the rain had reached its 5th day, it was obvious that there would be floods. Of what surprise are you speaking of?? it was no surprise

  15. Bien dit sa Kenny. Anonymous why don't you say who you are? Are you so blinded that you don't see the situation? perhaps where you live there was no flood but in other places there were and the floods were terrible threats to children. as a proof of this, the death that resulted.

  19. Parents are equally responsible in this case. They could have refrained their children from going to school when they saw that streets were flooded.

    ReplyDelete
  20. hmmm sooo Mauritius...the level of incompetency of them authorities hasn't improved much! but the blame and responsibility are also shared with them parents as well. why the heck did they allow their kids to attend school in such weather? why don't they use some gray matter and do realise that them head of state/ politicians/ decision-makers are not always the best the country can offer?

  23. hats off for this post morinn and to all those who have given their opinions here. I see some people are not indifferent and stupid and that is encouraging to us mauritians. may this sad incident serve as and example and reminder. sadly no strict actions have been taken and we have not even seen an apology on the part of the minister.

oui 10 ou 20 ou mem 5 morts li toujours bane lavie perdues. vous les jeunes zot bizin prend le dessus, coument kenny a dit.

but it is regretable to see youngsters more concerned and responsible than grown up politicians.

  24. astride has risen a good point here, about the competition in schools. parents think that if they refrain their children from going to school, the child "pou perdi". C a dir ki so banes camarades pou cone plis ki li. c'est 1 probleme de mentaliter et c'est sa aussi la cause sa bane problemes ki ti ariver hier la.

Rikesh, yeah parents have their share of responsibility as well but as other people said, parents don't want their children to miss classes

waz, yeah, the problem is that people rely too much on official decisions. they won't allow their kids to remain at home unless we got an official announcement.

astride, wai c triste ki bne parents pense kumsa. bne zenfan c pa bne robots kan mem!

kenny, wai no matter comier dimune mort, limportance c ki ine gagne bne cas de mort. c vraiment revoltant ki persone pane excuse zot. kan dharam gokhool ti appear dan info li ti plito pou confirme deces la plito ki apologize pou sa.
